Gallery vs. Museum
Yeah, I think there is an implication that galleries
sell art, museums collect and exhibit it, but that
said...

Dragonfly Dream never implied, hinted or otherwise
stated that she'd be selling actual mail art.  She DID
say that she would have to pay the rent by selling
something, though.  So what if it's mail art-like
postcards, artistamps, artist trading cards...???

Sell, money, invest, price, judge...hot button words
in mail art.

I remember this "mail art and money don't mix"
discussion from my first days online and with mail
art.  It can be a discussion that gets very heated and
emotional.  It's also interesting because I don't
believe there are any hard and fast rules...while many
would disagree with me.

My understanding of mail art's beginning is that it
was an attempt to encourage artists to create without
the pressure of producing something that would sell.
Something that a gallery would choose to hang,
something that a would get "juried" into a group show.
The mail art network offered a unique opportunity to
send off ideas, partially expressed ideas, experiments
with technique, or finished projects.  The main event
being the creation process.

What happened after it was mailed away was part of the
magic.  It still is in my book!

My dear mentor, arto posto, dropped me when we got
into this discussion and i still feel a bit
misunderstood.  Maybe not.  For some this is very
black and white while I see it having many shades of
grey.

Go Alice GO!   And good luck!

Love,
ex posto facto
