If you root with a stock Android image, as opposed to the image used by your provider for your phone, you will certainly reclaim memory. Providers tend to load a lot of crapware on their own Android images, just like PC vendors do on their PCs from the factory. Unfortunately, unlike a pc, without rooting, you can't remove most of the vendor crap. And, if you root with a stable stock Android image, amazingly no crapware.
