you sould be able to do a long press of the menu icon and change the reading mode from words, paragraphs, characters, ect. once you do a long press of the menu key, simply press it again to cycle through the modes.

The screen reader portion works well with android 4.1, the one thing it doesn't have, unless I missed it, is the ability to read by word or character the way you can with talkback. It's certainly good at what it does, however, I still see it mostly benefiting those running android 2.3. With android 4.1, everything mobile accessibility provides can easily be done using android's built in accessibility.
