Hello, I have the Google Nexus 4 (Jellybean 4.2) and am using Talkback exclusively. Using phone menus took a little playing around to figure out – It’s not the most elegant part of the interface. Here’s what I do.
After dialing the number and hitting ‘send’, search for a control on the lower left of the screen called ‘dial pad’ and double-tap. It will say ‘checked’. At that point I can explore and double-tap each required digit. I have to ignore how it sounds, though, as it sounds like each digit is getting entered twice. It’s a bit of a slow process and I’ve had the phone menu system time out on me a couple of times… very frustrating. But I’m getting quicker. Hope that helps – Brian. -- Brian Sellden Enterprise Application Integration (m) 303.946.2294 (h) 303.972.0833 From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Miranda Sent: Friday, January 04, 2013 6:25 AM To: Mobile Accessibility Android Users List Subject: Re: [MA] So May Questions, So Little Time Hi Nick, Yes, I agree with you that Talkback is much more Responsive than MA, and it also gives better speech feedback in some apps. I don’t use MA amymore at all now. As for voicemail and automatic call systems, sorry, I don’t have any experience with that. I hope somebody else can help you there. By the way, the built-in app for sending text messages is very accessible, and so is the calendar app. After getting used to them, I don’t need MA anymore at all. And anyway the MA calendar app is useless if you need to sync your calendar events with Google. And it’s also possible to type things using your voice when you use the Android keyboard. There is a speech input button to the left of the space bar. You will have to use an earphone for this though, to not have the speech from Talkback interfere. I’ve done some switching back between talk back and MA and I’m finding talk back to be much more responsive, but there are some things that seem to be much easier from within MA such as sending texts using my voice. Having said which, I’m back to talk back now because of the responsiveness issue. Do you know where I can find the Visual Voicemail icon? Apparently I need to reinstall this app in order to listen to my messages. How is your experience entering numbers on an automated phone system? I appreciate your help very much. By the way, your English is excellent. Thank you again. Did you turn on the explore by touch rfeature in Talkback? If you did, you should be able to go from one item to the next by swiping your finger over the screen from left to right. And to go back you go the opposite direction of course. When starting the phone for the first time, there are, I think, five home screens. The home screens behave like pages, so you can navigate from one to another by swiping from left to right and then back right to left. And again opposite to go to previous home screen. Talkback will give you some bleeps when changing pages and tell you on which home screen you are. Each home screen has different things on it, but they all have things like phone, people and apps. By double clicking anywhere on the screen when you hear “apps”, you get a list of applications installed on the phone, and again you can go through it by just swiping your finger left to right. Depending on how many apps you have installed, there may be more than one page of them. As for typing, I just use the built-in Android keyboard. It is on the lower part of the screen. It’s very easy to use: just feel across the screen until you hear the character you want to type, and then lift your finger. The character will then be entered. There is even the possibility to enter things by speech. So no need for a third-party keyboard on this phone. I hope this helps, and feel free to ask again whem you have more questions. And please excuse me for my not so perfecdt English, I’m from the Netherlands. I just got my Galacsy Nexus by Samsung yesterday, and I have a lot of questions. If you’re not using MA, what are you using for a home screen? How about a keyboard? On the Jelly Bean 4.1 home screen, I’m finding things like maps, search etc. I’m also finding images with numbers attached such as immage 61, immage 32, immage, 0 ETC. If I double tap them, I’m given additional options, but I have no way of knowing what they are before I double tap. Any help you can offer either here or off list would be very much appreciated. Thank you.
