Hi Jeff,
I can confirm this strange behaviour as well this side. I am still on Snow 
Leopard and I find that while I can read messages from Nick, they seem to have 
attachments. These messages are flagged and every time I try to open these, an 
alert box is triggered. So I don't think its a Lion issue: something to do with 
mail senders.
