Hi Bryan and others,

According to OtherWorld computing my 7,1 box can address 8GB. Since my bus
speed is 1.07 GHZ, I assume there would be an advantage installing 1333 MHZ
over the 1067 that I have?

I guess the answer to my next question depends on my normal level of disk
activity. I realize that upgrading from 4GB to 8GB would make it possible to
address more stuff without reading from the hard drive, but where/how would
that make a difference. My HD spins at 5400 RPM, and I would think the memory
and processor speed often can not function any more quickly than your slowest
I/O device regardless how much you have or how quickly it runs?

I assume others have upgraded memory, and would be willing to share whether
there was a tangible benefit? Also, perhaps that was a one day sale, but I
could not find the memory on NewEgg at the price Kevin B quoted earlier. The
best I found was a little over $50 US for 8GB 1066 MHZ (two sticks) at Amazon.

TIA for any insight.
Geoff

Hello Lee, Eric, Kevin and All,

It is sometimes determined by third parties that it is possible to install
and/or address more RAM than is specified by Apple. When trying to determine
how much RAM can actually be installed and / or addressed, I personally like to
reference Other World Computing at www.macsales.com. Below, I have pasted some
of their information regarding maximum Macbook RAM. Note that this list
includes both the white plastic models as well as the black plastic and
aluminum unibody models that were manufactured for a couple of years. This list
uses the "Model Identifier," which is the preferred reference point for
determining the model you are working with. The model identifier can be found
by going to the Apple Menu / About This Mac / More Information / Hardware
Overview. If running Lion, you might need to click a button labeled "System
Report" after you've clicked the More Information button. Your model identifier
will be something like "Macbook5,1." Here's the list from OWC.

  MacBook1,1 (All) - Install/use up to 2.0GB total memory
MacBook2,1 (All) - Install up to 4.0GB total memory, uses up to 3.0GB. Note:
Although limited to physically utilizing a maximum of 3GB, there is a
performance benefit due to 128 Bit addressing when 4GB( 2GB x 2 Matched set) is
installed.
  MacBook3,1 (All) - Install/use up to 4.0GB total memory
  MacBook4,1 (All) - Install/use up to 6.0GB total memory
MacBook5,1 (All) OWC tested to support Maximum Memory of 8.0GB. NOTE: these
models require the most current EFI version as well as Mac OS X v10.6.6.
MacBook5,2 **2.0GHz Model Only** Install/uses up to 6.0GB total memory
MacBook5,2 **2.13GHz Model Only** Apple factory specification maximum 4.0GB,
OWC tested to support 6.0GB maximum RAM.
MacBook6,1, MacBook6,2 & MacBook 7,1 (All): OWC tested to support Maximum
Memory of 8.0GB:

  HTH,
  Bryan
