These drives are a bit of a pain... I got one on a 2010 December special.

THere is a second partition that is not really quite there called a virtual
CD... I found that there were newer versions of the software on the WD web
site, and downloaded them. The Virtual CD has a control panel that is 50%
accessable via Voice OVer. And I would not recomend using it. There is also a
driver that is supposed to improve performance, but I still found the drive
slow...

In any case, try formating using the WD program, and then verifying with Disk
Utility. THere is also a command ( I believe command line) to prevent the
Virtual CD Disk from showing up every time you plug it in.

If your budget allows it, I suggest returning the Passport drive and getting a
firewire capable drive if your computer supports it. The Firewire transfer
rates appear to be better.

If you need more help, I can go back and research the tools I used.
