Zack, your suggestion was extremely helpful, i.e. it worked! Unfortunately, VO doesn't let you know that the item (or language in this case) needs to be checked. VO seems paradoxically negligent in this context. After all, since the VO cursor is on the language you want, and since you stop interacting with the language, one might think that VO might say a little more.
Your advice was perfect, and I will now enjoy writing in German just that little bit more.
