Howdy!

Thank you bringing the subject of Hypercard to my attention.

A simple Google search revelas much about this application including the fact that its still being used by big corporations and small schools alike, the concept of Hypercard seems to be very similar to Dbase which I grew up with and programmed with for many years hence Hypercard, like Dbase the system allows custom apps and so on thus its a great tool to teach children programming concepts and keep large databases etc.

According to various articles I've seen, the Hypercard system has not undergone any serious development for quite some time, 15 years in fact though its up to date enough to run on the last generation of Power PC Dual Core processor computers to come out, the question is has anyone bothered porting Hypercard to the later Intel Mac chip sets? Perhaps further research will uncover an answer to this question.

I won't go on about databases and Screen Readers here as I'd be going
off topic for the list so if you want more explanation then write me
privately but I will say this, Screen Reader users - whether that be
Windows or Mac - are deprived of good accessible and easy to use
database software, I've been using Bento for the last 2 versions and
like you I love the software because - well in my opinion at least - its
exactly my idea of what a database should be and I've been programming
with database languages/applications for over 20 years.

The nearest thing Windows users have in my view is something called "Ask
Sam".

Under the LINUX OS there are several choices as is the case with IOS,
Bento is the obvious example here but there's another nice database app
called I Database for Ipad and Iphone.

I'd like to add a plug for Bento, assuming your needs are for a
simple, basic database. I've recently begun using Bento version 4 on my
Mac and am liking it more all the time. I've found it to be very
accessible with VO, although I can point out a few glitches as with
almost any application. A patch was recently released to add Lion
compatibility and it seems to be working fine so far.
I find it to be simple to create new databases and have been able to
import existing data files. It also automatically links to my iCal
Events, iCal Tasks, Address Book, and photo libraries, and I like the
fact that I can view and edit all of these in the tabular format offered
within Bento.
I've never used another database with a screen reader, so I don't have
a reference point for screen reader ease-of-use regarding Bento. It took
me some trial and error to figure out where I needed to interact, where
I needed to press Return, and where I could just start typing to get the
results I wanted, but after a few hours I felt pretty comfortable and
really began moving along. I haven't tried any of the advanced formulas
or fields yet, so can't speak to that level.
I've also used the Bento iPhone App and have found it to be VO
accessible too, but it has crashed on me a couple of times with no
obvious cause. No data was lost. It is simple to setup wi-fi syncing
between the iphone and mac apps, and there's also an iPad-specific
version which I'm looking forward to testing.
A note about the Bento for Mac PDF User Guide: I find it to be clear,
concise, and easily navigable in Preview. It is a great example of a
getting started guide, but it does not go very deep into the
application. Fortunately, there are active User groups out there.
As of this writing, Bento 4 is on sale in the Mac App Store and direct
from FIleMaker for US $29.99, normally US $49.99. I don't know if the
sale also applies outside of the US.
You can also download a free 30 day trial from the following site:

You might try Bento from the Filemaker team, or else I am told that
FileMaker Pro for Mac is now accessible.
