Hi, The apple TV should work fine in this situation. They would have access to their local media as they wish, but would also have access to netflix podcasts in the Apple TV and also loads of internet streaming radio stations.
When I bought my Apple TV I bought it to stream my local media collection as I was doing for years using an old CD3O networked mp3 player. I find I do that less and less and use the Apple TV for its other functions. I was also able to stream XM Radio using the Music Doc app on my iPhone to the apple TV using airplay.. This allowed it to come through my connected stereo.
