For the benefit of anyone following this list who might be interested, I'm off
and running and grateful to Lynne for her help.

I have no light perception, yet can easily set up an Apple-TV without sighted
assistance after learning how to change inputs on my TV. The first step is to
set the tv's input to HDMI, and connect the ATV accordingly. The last step is
to plug in the ATV and wait about 20 seconds. Samantha will then speak through
your tv admonishing you to press the lower right hand button on the remote
three times to enable VoiceOver, and you will be guided through the menus hence
forth. Once again, excellent attentiveness to accessibility demonstrated by
Apple in designing ATV's interface.

  helo Geoff

iTunes doesn't see the device. You don't configure it that way. Write me
privately.

  Hi Lynne,

Since your last post the little box was delivered. I didn't expect iTunes
would find it unless I first entered a WPA2 key, so I attached it to the router
directly via eathernet. The device shows up in my router configuration as
"Apple-TV" with a mac and ip address, but when I launched iTunes my device tree
view is empty.

The remote appears to have three large buttons with two buttoney looking
things on the back that I assume is actually the seal for the battery? Is
there a way to proceed without sighted help? If not, what is the minimum that
I would need to ask a neighbor to do?

  Thanks again and best regards.

   Hello Geoff
You don't need the UsB port. You plug the Apple TV into your network, or
configure its wifi network and the software is downloaded via the Internet.

   Hi Lynne,

Thanks much for the info. I understand that IOS5 will render it possible to
update without need to connect to iTunes, but until then, how is this done if
the USB port is unavailable?

If it is indeed possible to connect to iTunes I assume I could enable
voiceOver via the "configure universal access" dialog in iTunes? Are you
saying that its possible to turn VO on via the remote? Sorry if I totally
misinterpreted your post. I guess the bottom line question is how I can attach
to iTunes without the USB cable?

    Best regards.

    hello Geoff

Yes, this is correct; but you can do all of your iOS updates via iTunes.
You can configure Apple TV using the supplied remote.

We plan to do a podcast on this shortly, when Gordon is up to it.

    Greetings all,

I'm expecting an Apple tv shortly, and recall reading that the mini USB
port is not intended for use by consumers. Is this correct?

If so, presumably it's not possible to update the IOS version and I will
not be able to use it out of the box without getting someone to go into
settings -> general -> accessibility?

TIA for any clarification and best regards.
