Geoff I completely take your point. I'm on a 3gs as well, and it is literally
about to die. The lock button takes about four presses before it does
anything; I could go on.

My point was that if I didn't have to update I probably wouldn't bother. Now
that being said, the obvious come-back is "well why not just go for the 4?".
And this is fair enough. Two reasons:

1. I suspect the price differential on Irish networks won't be enough to
warrant using legacy technology. If it is, I might actually consider it.
2. I'm curious from both a user perspective, and that of a research
practitioner. SUre I'll play with the voice assistant why not, it's there.

Regarding the camera, I again take the point. However, it all depends on what
lens is in thee device (something I've no idea about). Yes, the greater
resolution *should* make OCR very interesting indeed. However, if the camera
is designed to take good photos containing objects, say 5 feet away, it may not
work close-up. (disclaimer: I'm no expert here but I've just had a
conversation with someone who spends thousands on lenses so I'll trust his
judgement). He reckons it should be good, though whether it proves as useful
as we all hope remains to be seen.

In short, this device is nice; nothing wrong with it, but nothing to get
over-excited with either. But it's also not a surprise really. Apple went to
the 3gs before the 4, so the odds are there will be another new toy sometime
next year that actually moves the game forward a bit.

I liked your example of the flight query though. There's no doubt this app is
very cleverly using context. *laughing* Can I justify this as a "teaching
aide" for my course in human-computer-interaction this semester? absolutely.
Will I get my school to pay for it? Oh well, it was just a thought and worth a
try!
