Colin, Have you tried to reboot your computer and then connect your phone again?
My phone died and did not respond to any reset during the upgrade. I even shown it to a sighted people, he told me that the phone was powering up when pressing home and power keys, Iphone logo appeared, then the screen went black. I thought I may have to make a trip to the Apple store. But thing went OK after I rebooted my computer and repeat the update process again. I am not sure if rebooting the machine help you.
