`i had a similar problem yesterday. ``my home internet access was down again (don't even get me started on the joys of `sprint `mobile `broadband), so I tethered my iphone figuring I could download the `ios upgrade via that connection, let it install, and by that time my Sprint internet would be back up. `well, the update downloaded and started the install process, but then after the phone rebooted `i got nothing. I tried all the standard recovery steps, but there was no way I could get itunes on my mac to add the iphone to the sources list. Eventually itunes started telling me I needed to have an internet connection to complete the process. sprint was and is still down here, so I went to bed, woke up early and walked to a starbucks hotspot, connected my MBA to the internet, attached my iphone, and voila! It was then able to complete the process. I did some googling and ```````as far as I can tell it seems as if apple requires itunes to talk to one of their servers at some po int during the update process after the update has been downloaded but before the phone has been restored. This essentially seems to mean that such an upgrade cannot be performed if your sole means of accessing the internet is through your tethered iphone. :-(
