all macs support firewire as standard. macbook, macbook pro, imac, etc.

USB is just as good.

pro quality doesn't mean expensive hardware. you could use an M Audio Fasttrack 
or similar I/O hardware with a decent mic and cables and achieve it through the 
software UI.

Protools 10 works out at about £450 or so, you can get a decent package for 
about £650 or so with the hardware and iLok dongle.

I had to work with pro tools for years as a student as that was the only decent 
thing.
