There is a application called Text Edit which comes with the Mac will work fine with Word docs with the exception of tables. The name text Edit is very misleading as sounds like notepad or a basic text editor. It is actually a fully fledged and powerful word processor and credit to Apple for bundling it free with all macs.
Hope you enjoy your Mac. Take it easy and give yourself time. There is a learning curve. I have had my Imac since August and I am still definitely making my way still.
