Thanks for your post. The problem with that solution is that it changes the default soundcard across the board. Onlike the Windows version of Skype, there does not appear to be a way to change the output level in the Skype preferences. Is that correct? If so, bummer.

No. Well yes. you need to set the output also to the sound card of yoru headset in order for that to work. You do thiw in system prefs or by holding down option f12 to get there or option fn 12 if you have to.
