Hi Carolyn,

I don't think there's a keyboard command to maximize a window, but a little bit
of research showed that you can set up an AppleScript that will perform the
same action as navigating to the "Zoom" button of your window and pressing it
(VO-Space), which performs the action that you want in toggle fashion (e.g.,
the first time you press this button will zoom the window to occupy maximum
size; the next time you press the "Zoom" button restores the window to its
original size).

If you save this AppleScript to the Library/Scripts folder under your user
account under some name like "Zoom Window", and set up your AppleScript Editor
preferences so that the check box to show your Script folder on your menu bar
is checked, you'll be able to use this AppleScript to maximize or de-maximize
your windows by pressing VO-M-M followed by Z and a press of the return button
to perform this action. You could also assign a keyboard shortcut to the
AppleScript, either through the regular keyboard shortcuts options in System
Preferences, or by setting this up as Keyboard Commander shortcut in VoiceOver
Utility for systems that are running Snow Leopard or Lion.

Here's the code, which comes from the Mac OS X Hints article, "Create a
keyboard shortcut for the maximize button":
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=20051227001809626

tell application "System Events"
        if UI elements enabled then
set FrontApplication to (get name of every process whose
frontmost is true) as string
                tell process FrontApplication
click button 2 of window 1
--button 2 is the green "zoom" button for all
applications
--window 1 is always the frontmost window.
                end tell
        else
                tell application "System Preferences"
                        activate
                        set current pane to pane
"com.apple.preference.universalaccess"
display dialog "UI element scripting is not enabled.
Check 'Enable access for assistive devices'"
                end tell
        end if
end tell

I'll try to followup on this, because I'm pressed for time right now.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
