Hello everybody I just thought I'd mention this for the benefit of any Braille producers who, like us, might be interested to finally see an accessible and hassle-free Braille translator for Mac which also includes the very latest Braille mathematical and language tables, (including Unified English Braille). Duxberry Systems is currently at a fairly advanced stage of the development of an accessible, (VoiceOver compatible) version of its industry-standard translator package for Apple Mac.
It's still unclear which embossers will be supported from, for instance, manufacturers such as Index Braille; which produced earlier embosser models utilising serial and parallel communications only. It's doubtful that these early embossers will be supported since their methods of interface are not native to the operating system on modern machines. However, we and others have communicated with the company and asked them to consider making support for the earlier models available with the use of an adapter. Speaking purely from a personal prospective, this support would be invaluable. Our embosser is an older model and we're not particularly disposed towards paying thousands of Pounds to buy a new embosser just at the moment. I am, of course, aware that there are other manufacturers who produce similar equipment. However, the specifications of the Index models are more like what we specifically would require. In the end, I'm sure we're going to have to upgrade; as part of Gordon's forthcoming work will include the production of magazines and manuals in Braille. This is where the Index Everest-D v4 comes into its own. It features Ethernet, USB and, rumour has it, Wi-Fi connectivity; therefore enabling it to not only be used by any computer on a LAN or WAN, but also making it reasonably future-proof. Anyway, getting back to my point. If there is interest I'll let the list know when we get more details on DBT-Mac.
