Depending on what kind of epub document it is, there will be
different formats (mp3, html, text, and so on) but there should by
any means ever be any preference files, or the like.
A .css file, sure, but that's all.
There is an xml file, which describes the various files in the epub
volume, and where they go in the grand scheme of things, but other
than that, and some data files (which mentioned above can be any
format, but are usually html) there shouldn't be much else in the
epub file.
For example, one epub document I have here (a magazine I subscribe to
and download in epub format) contains the following:
META-INF folder which contains the aforementioned xml file,
mimetype (which simply tells the epub reader what format the various
files are,
OEBPS folder which contains the actual content of the (in this case)
magazine:
and in that folder are the following files
content.opf, containing all the metadata about keywords, authors,
publisher, and so forth,
an images folder to contain the pictures included in the magazine,
styles folder containing the styles.css file for the html content,
toc.ncx which is the file the epub reader refers to when it displays
your table of contents, so it knows where to go when you click on an
entry (basically, your index.html file if it were a website)
and lastly, a text folder containing the actual magazine files, which
in this case are named
section1.xhtml to section25.xhtml with a cover.xhtml as well.
That's it.
If there are other items in the folder it extracts to, they're either
additional files unnecessary for the epub document, or some
proprietary junk thrown in to appease some commercial epub readers.
Since I don't use any of those though, I can't comment on those.
I personally always extract the files, and read them with safari, it
works best for me.
I have however thought from time to time that it would be good to
have a dedicated epub reader that is all accessible, and perhaps one
of these days I'll actually get around to building such a thing, but
for now, it doesn't irritate me enough to bother.
hth.
