Hello Jim -- It is not possible to read by paragraph, line, word or character 
in Adobe Digital Editions 1.8 on the Mac. I've pasted below my  recent email 
detailing some of the shortcomings that still exist in the latest version of 
ADE 1.8, which I believe is the fourth preview of this App. Also, Esther posted 
a reply containing lots of additional information. You can find Esther's 
message in the archives for June 9. If you have some spare time and lots of 
spare patience, please consider adding a post to Adobe's feedback forum. The 
folks at Adobe have been unresponsive to the two recent forum posts from VO 
Users, so perhaps some additional posts might prod them to say something. A 
link is included at the bottom of this email.
