I have not used Adobe Digital Edition on the Mac but wonder if the shift VO
C command to copy last phrase spoken to clipboard may help here? I use this
command extensively to use in a variety of circumstances, whether it is
copying an error message spoken by Voiceover, window title information,
dialogue boxes and it is even the easiest way I find to copy text off Safari
pages.

It is not ideal but you could have Text Edit open. Play your book with Adobe
Digital editions . Then if there was some text that you wanted spelt out or
reviewed , simply press shift vo C an then this could be pasted into Text
Edit for review.

This command works with Voiceover copying other non-editable parts of the
Mac system so in theory I cannot see why it should not work here. using this
method you could use Adobe Digital editions for general reading but just
copy into Text Edit the bits you need to study or quote more carefully.

Hello Jim -- It is not possible to read by paragraph, line, word or
character in Adobe Digital Editions 1.8 on the Mac. I've pasted below my
recent email detailing some of the shortcomings that still exist in the
latest version of ADE 1.8, which I believe is the fourth preview of this
App. Also, Esther posted a reply containing lots of additional information.
You can find Esther's message in the archives for June 9. If you have some
spare time and lots of spare patience, please consider adding a post to
Adobe's feedback forum. The folks at Adobe have been unresponsive to the two
recent forum posts from VO Users, so perhaps some additional posts might
prod them to say something. A link is included at the bottom of this email.

Bryan

epub/PDF reader that can handle reading materials scrambled using Adobe's
DRM protection scheme.

turn pages, and read a page at a time using VO, it Unfortunately still lacks
some basic important reading functions such as the ability to read by
paragraph, sentence, word or character, or to interact with the text. In
addition, the "annotate" functions are not accessible, and several items on
the toolbar are unlabeled.

for my schoolwork and I think this application has the potential to be a
useful tool if Adobe can manage to complete the process of making it fully
VO-compatible. Unfortunately, as is so often the case with Adobe, they are
moving at a snail's pace and don't seem to be too concerned with the missing
functionality.
