Hmm I've managed to shut it down with the power button. but that was when I blue the hard drive up. Don't' ask. But for me on my laptop that worked. but you do bring up some observations there. Fred works and for what I need it for it's fine lol. Not the best voice but if all you are doing is repairing the disk then that works fine lol! HOpe that sort of helps.
