Hi Paul

There are a lot of different backup solutions. Whilst we do use Super Duper!
for base level backups, we use our own server as well as a programme called
CrashPlan to give us remote backup of our files. We tried last year to
encourage others to do the same by offering online storage. But the takeup was
so poor that we decided it wasn't worth the effort, so we went in a different
direction.

But yes, anybody who owns a Mac should consider products such as Super Duper!
or Carbon Copy Cloner. The recovery partition in Lion should work fine, and it
would have probably either reinstalled the OS from scratch or, if you go into
the Utilities menu I believe there's a "Restore" option so you could have
restored your Super Duper! backup from there.

Never actually done it, but I'm almost sure that would work.

Hello,
Yesterday for the first time ever I had to recover my iMac from a SuperDuper!
backup on an external hard disk. I now wonder what I could have done if I did
not have a SuperDuper! backup. This is with Mac OS 10.7.4.

After some confusion with VMWare Fusion I found that my iMac froze in
VoiceOver. On re-booting VoiceOver worked OK for the Logon menu (I have a
password which I have to enter to start my iMac). After that the iMac spoke a
script which announces the Mac OS version and then froze in VoiceOver. My
sighted wife told me that the screen showed VoiceOver muted , the mouse moved
OK, but all hotkeys and track pad taps did nothing.

I was able to boot from my external hard disk which contained a SuperDuper!
backup only two days old so no great loss. I restored the SuperDuper! backup
and all worked fine. If I did not have that SuperDuper! backup what could I
have done? I notice that Lion has a recovery partition which seemed to work
when I first installed Lion but does not seem to work now after numerous
software updates. If that recovery partition had worked what would it have done
for me? My only Mac OS CD is for Leopard so recovering from that would have
been a very long and maybe now impossible job!

Thank goodness for SuperDuper! but how should I advise friends in a similar
position who do not have SuperDuper!

Many thanks.
