I'm not sure of the version of open office I have as I've had the app for quite some time. it's on a clean lion install, when I went to open it OSX told me I'd need a java runtime and offered to download and install it. I allowed it and it works perfectly.

This is indeed curious and very interesting.

This was discussed extensively about 6 months ago on another Mac list and
all those attempting to run open office under Lion there were experiencing
the same problem as I was. That is no typing echo. No ability to review by
any element such as moving a cursor along to check the spelling of a word.
What you could do was interact with a sentence and use VO A to read that
sentence but for all practical word processing it did not work as unless you
were a perfect typist who never needed to edit a sentence you were stuck.
Incidentally the same problem was reported for both Open Office and Libra
Office.

This is the first time I have ever heard of anybody who has managed to make
Open Office usable under Lion.
Could I ask

1. When did you install it? Was it recently, it may be that there is a
recent update which has resolved these issues?
2. Alternatively did you install it under Snow Leopard and then upgrade to
Lion? It may be that some functionality was carried across.
3. Have you installed anything 3rd party? Perhaps Java? I know under Windows
some access can be achieved with Java Access Bridge but did not believe that
anything like that was available on a Mac.

I am sure that if it is possible to now run Open Office under Lion with
proper VO access there would be a lot of people interested.

That's odd as I've used it in lion with no issues.

Can confirm it is worse than useless under Mountain Lion.

As far as I am aware Open Office is only accessible under Snow Leopard.
Certainly useless under Lion. I do not know about Mountain Lion.
