Gordon, I'm not even sure there is a USB on it, unless the port on the drive doubles as both thunderbolt and USB? I'd doubt this but I'm certainly no expert.
I have it at raid 5 at the minute but I agree 0 is also an option. I presume you're not using time machine to back up?
