Hi Ian, If you're using a British keyboard then the pound key or "#" is typed with Option+ 3. On a U.S., Canadian, or Australian keyboard It's typed with Shift+3. But then, all we dollar users have to press Option+3 to get the symbol for pound (sterling) or "£".
