you don't need to open them separately, no vo commands are necessary, just use the down arrow (with quick nav turned off) and the list of items will show up, arrow down to the one you want, then prss space, and it will be selected. This is the same behavior safari/vo has had since tiger, so it always works. Of course, you must have vo cursor follows system cursor checked for this to work properly, or use the move vo cursor to system cursor (or vice versa depending on how you got to that point) and that will solve your problem.
