I'm not Gprdon but I"m stuck at the university and board so here goes.

1. after you back everythign up turn off the computer.

2. plug your stick in to the usb slot

3. hold down option key

4. hit the power button.


5. 
arrow left once. this shuld put you in your usb stick

6. hit enter.

7. wait for about 30 seconds and then turn on vo.

8. go through the prompts and choose disk utility

9. choose your drive name let'ssay Sarah's lovely mac.
10. choose erase.

11. choose mac hfs extended journaled from the pop up menu.

12. Hit erase and conferm.

13. quit disk utiility and you are back to the table.

15. choose reinstall mountain lion
16.. go throug th eprompts and away you go. You will have to set up yoru icloud 
again but it's worth it.
