Hi Donal & Anne, -- I've also got some gripes about ML Mail, but am fortunate 
enough not to be experiencing the attachment issue you mention. My headers are 
set to default and I'm running 10.8.2. VO does announce my attachments as 
"embedded" but I also have the "Save" and "Quick Look" buttons in my headers.

I imagine you've already tried the following, but if not maybe go to Mail / 
Preferences / View, and set "Show Header Detail" to "Custom," Interact with the 
resulting table of choices, make sure Attachments is in the list, save your 
changes, and then check your headers again.
