I hear from someware I think maybe from a KB article that  that hardware trick 
no longer works. I'd try and bring up the conversation I had with someone about 
this on twitter but since I can only pull up the last 3000 tweets that will not 
be possible as this conversation took place about a month ago.

I hope you get your thing solved with out an OS install. I would try booting to 
the recovery consul  and doing a permissions repair that way. I think I or 
someone sent some very detailed instructions last thursday or so.
