You might want to check to see if the external drive is locked. Hit cmd shift I 
on the drive after you get to it via the computers and drives list, cmd shift c 
from the finder, then check to see if the lock box is checked. if it is uncheck 
and authenticate. I hope this applies the unlicked state to the sub folders in 
the drive if any.

Also what format is the drive?
