Also, if you don't know if your device is on, doesn't the mute switch cause 
the unit to vibrate when you flick it back?
That would tell you if it is on or not.

If you plug your phone in, Sorry, I meant iPod. Anyways, if you plug that in 
and turn it on you should if it did not totally brake make the little sound 
that means that it is plugged in. and it should appear in iTunes.
