I use both techniques depending on the type of site I need to create. Drupal works perfectly well with Mac indeed my own small course site is built on it. You need to make tweaks to get rid of a few things like an overlay, but that's a matter of about 15 seconds at the start once you have installed. It honestly depends on what you want to achieve with the site. If you want a forum, blog, or ECommerce facilities, then Drupal is the easiest way to go. No point reinventing wheels as a former lecturer of mine used to say. One small point: I actually teach this stuff at undergrad and graduate level so I have some materials (they're not great actually) but I'm happy to share.
