Hi David,

Can you check whether you have the mute button turned on?  On the left of the 
phone, just above the volume up and down buttons is a flat, rectangular switch. 
 Push it up (e.g., toward the front screen). If VoiceOver says "unmute", you 
had this turned on, and that is why you don't have sound effects.
