Brilliant I was Googling away on this problem to no avail. Initially I was confused. On the iPhone 5, I don't know about other phones, the Hardware Mute switch is unique in not being a press button. Every other control works by pressing in so I assumed you had to press it. Eventually, by accident, I discovered it is an actual switch by clicking . >From anybody else like me moving from an iPod the instructions are as follows. The switch does not work by moving in line with the travel of the phone. You either pull the switch towards you or push it away and voiceover will announce the hardware mute status.

I'm not sure where it is on the 5, but on the 4S it's on the left edge when the home button is facing you. Best, Zack.
