Hi Jim,

We're talking about the splitters that separate the Messages window from the
Preview pane in the main Message Viewer window of Mail. If you are using the
default mail configuration in Mountain Lion or Lion, then this will be a
vertical splitter. If you set up your Mail preferences (Command+comma to bring
up the preferences window) so that you've checked "Use classic view" under the
Viewing tab, then this will be a horizontal splitter.

In classic view, I navigate from the Messages table to the horizontal splitter
that separates the displayed Message content window if the Preview pane is not
hidden. Then I route my mouse cursor with VO-Command-F5 and double click on the
splitter to hide or show the Preview pane. In the default mail view for the
Message Viewer window, I navigate from the Messages column group to a vertical
splitter that separates the displayed Message content window if the Preview
pane is not hidden, route my mouse cursor, and I double click on the vertical
splitter to hide or show the Preview pane.

On my laptop, I can double-click on my Trackpad or I can press near the top of
my Trackpad and drag to the bottom to remove the horizontal splitter, as long
as I have actually pressed the Tracked so that the drag action registers. I
just prefer to do this with Mouse Keys because on some older laptops and
operating system combinations I've found this key action to be more robust.
Probably people who have come to the Mac from the experience of using the iOS
touch screen devices won't have difficulty with the Trackpad tap actions, but
I've found in some instances that it's easier to explain to people how to do
the double click with a key action. (Set up your Accessibility under System
Preferences so that Mouse Keys can be toggled on or off by pressing the Option
key 5 times, then press Fn+I for keyclicks. Or, in this case, hold down the Fn
key and tap the "I" key twice.) If you are removing a vertical splitter with
the Trackpad drag action, you have to press on the far left
side and drag to the right. The other reason that I prefer to use Mouse Keys
and do real clicks on the splitters is that these always work, and I don't have
to remember which operating system versions allow you to use the VO-Shift-Space
software keyclick shortcut on splitters. (VO-Shift-Space does work in Mountain
Lion and Snow Leopard, but not in Lion.) If I were using an extended keyboard
with NumPad Commander turned on, I'd use the "5" key of the NumPad to click. If
using an Apple Wireless keyboard, or a Mac Laptop with KeyRemap4MacBook
installed and NumPad Commander turned on, I'd just press Fn+I for keyclicks.

With the Preview pane hidden, messages will continue to be flagged as "unread"
as I navigate through the Messages window. However, I can't use the VO-J
shortcut to jump between my selection in the Messages window and the message
content because that window (i.e., the Preview pane) is no longer being
displayed.
HTH. Cheers,

Esther
