Don't know why you're getting duplicates unless you are downloading from the
cloud and from your own physical music collection. I don't know if this can
be an issue, as I don't use iCloud just now. However, there is an option in
menus to show duplicates, so you can remove them, could be a bit tedious if
you have thousands, but that's one way. As for adding to a playlist, I use
what I still think of as the applications menu [VO shift M] and go to 'add
to playlist' and then choose from the list of playlists, the one I want.

Subject: iTunes And Duplicate Items
Hello everybody
Does anybody know whether it's possible to stop iTunes from downloading
duplicates of every item in our iTunes library? This has to be a bug, what
sense does it make to clutter up hard disk space with duplicates? They
also seem to show up in a playlist which brings me on to another related
question. How do you add items to an iTunes playlist from the FindeR? It
seems that if we try using the "Up Next" function of iTunes it is adding
tracks to the playlist in random sequences rather than the sequence they
are displayed in. I have to admit that this software really seems to
behave extremely oddly at times and, were it not for the fact that we need
to maintain mobile devices as well, plus the fact that we frequently get
items from the iTunes Store both for our own use and for our niece's use,
we would definitely consider switching to an alternative player because it
seems to me that iTunes is becoming more and more unusable with every
version they release. The interface is very
cluttered and not exactly user-friendly as it used to be.
Warm regards
Lynne
