I really wasn't questioning what you said, that would be silly, you know lot

to wipe my hard drive and reinstall afresh.

Huh? I don't tink reformatting the hard drive will hall the poster make an
incripted dmg where they can put selected documents. My disk is not
incripted but I do have about 5 incripted dmgs where I have several times
not to be touched by anyone but me.

Where do I find Disk Utility? Can't seem to find anything of that name

When you need access to said Document's hit Command+O on that DMG in
Document's you will be asked for the password and then the DMG will be
