Hello Andy,

Have you got the preview pane showing? If so, that would explain the 
inconsistencies. Just landing on a message marks it as read because it 
automatically opens the message. This is why I always get rid of the preview 
pane. I prefer to decide for myself whether I want to open a message or not.
