Hi Jim, I'd cheat here. I'd make a directory outside the current one and copy the files there. Once you're certain that's worked, I'd go back to the original place and then delete the files from that location. Then I'd copy the newly created sub-directory back. Once you're sure it's all there, you can delete it from the place where you copied it.
Of course this doesn't explain why deleting the files in the original location is causing them to disappear inside the new sub-directory. This is cumbersome but might work.
