You can remove them, and the mac will just recreate them the next time
it runs spotlight. There was a post here some time ago about how to
fix this problem by replacing the unmount program in osx with a shell
script that automatically removes the files, and while it works
extremely well, it's not something I'd recommend to the average user,
as a single typo during the install process could cause no end of
trouble in the future. I'd thought apple provided an option in finder
to have it not put these files on removable media, but I don't have a
current machine, so can't verify this, however, it may be worth
checking into if you have the time.
These files do get quite large at times, and removing them on one of
my sd cards freeed up nearly 3GB of disk space, which was a lot more
than I'd expected to recover. I vaguely recall reading about a method
to tell finder not to create these files using some terminal commands,
but I don't remember where I read it, and since I didn't implement the
suggestions, I can't go look at my configuration to see what it was.
Google may be able to help though. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but
if you really want the solution I use, you can go to:
http://bit.ly/gnzWbL
for the article that explains the process. Again, I don't recommend
it for anyone who isn't very comfortable in terminal, but I use it
here, and it works perfectly.
