Hi Dónal,

I read one of the reviews that said they had contacted the developer, and that
the new version was still pending approval from Apple. However, in the
meantime in response to the contact, the dev had supplied them with a separate
serial number so they could download and use the version from the developer's
web site. This sounds a lot better.

I don't know anything about the iOS app (called Gourmet (for iOS)) though, or
whether they have really solved the cloud syncing issue.

The things I like about Mac Gorumet are the recipe sharing features and
existing community/forum, which were nice when starting up. They start you off
with a large sample recipe pack, which can be a nice feature.

They've separately put the MacGourmet and MacGourmet Deluxe packages on sale
($9.99 reduced from $24.99 for MacGourmet, and $34.99 reduced from $49.99 for
MacGourmet Deluxe). I don't think the Mac App Store lets you "upgrade", but if
you can get the license/serial number from the MacGourmet web site, you could
just get the $9.99 recipes only version (no meal-planning, nutrition, shopping
list modules), and see whether you like it. The upgrade price to the deluxe
version from the web site would be $24.99 (same as the Mac App Store Deluxe
Price).

Here are the items I caught that are on sale:
• MacGourmet ($9.99 on sale, lists for $24.99) by Mariner Software
https://itunes.apple.com/app/macgourmet/id403560571?mt=12
The deluxe version of MacGourmet with meal-planning, nutritional information,
and generating shopping lists is also on sale, but at less of a discount:
• MacGourmet Deluxe ($34.99 on sale, lists for $39.99)
https://itunes.apple.com/app/macgourmet-deluxe/id412646750?mt=12
There is also an iOS app:
• Gourmet (for iOS) ($1.99 on sale, lists for $3.99)
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/gourmet-for-ios/id711561842?mt=8

There is the ability to import Paprika Recipe Manager formats now covered on
the FAQ web pages for version 4. The Mac app version of MacGourmet has always
been very accessible, and sharing with other (MacGourmet) users may be a bit
easier than with Paprika in terms of database sharing.

The other feature I like is the ability to set up "smart" lists in your
criteria when looking for recipes by ingredients or other criteria. That's a
very Mac-like feature that has been integrated into MacGourmet. And, as I
said, when I started using MacGourmet, I was able to find web search results
from their forums of specific categories of recipes that were shared. That's
now hosted by Mariner Software, who bought the rights a year and a half ago
from Advenio, so I don't know what that's like. (The old forum web site is
still around.)

I have no additional insights about the iOS app. (It does strike me that if
you get the recipes database for $9.99 and can get the serial number for
version 4 at the developer's web site, that could be a good deal, and then you
could upgrade later, if you wanted.)

Cheers,

Esther
