hello, and welcome to the list. It depends on what you will be using it for.
Someone can correct me if I"m wrong as I am a bit behind in the mac world. Once you choose your ram size in the newer models you will not be able to upgrade. If you will be using your mac to just surf, do school work, etc 4 should be fine. If how ever you anticipate in the future running windows either virtually or via boot camp, editing with garage band, doing a seri project etc, 70grade it to 8. The same goes with the hard drive. I hope others will give advice and examples as well. Good luck and try your best and absorb what you can in terms of learning the beast. it is very pattern driven.
