Hello Eleanor, I’m wondering whether your problem might not be Mission Control. I always disable Mission Control as I find it useless for me and it has a tendency to interfere with other functions. You can disable it by going into System Preferences, Mission Control, and setting all its short cuts to “-“ which is the last choice in the pop up menus.
