I am not sure I agree with this. I find that if I am in column view then setting the view options with command J to arrange by name and sort by kind pretty much delivers this result. For example If I do this on my documents folder I find at the top of the window are my folder alias files but after that the folders are all grouped together alphabetically followed by a similar alphabetical list of the single files in the . Given that that Finder pretty much treats the folder alias as a folder anyway this makes some sense.
