If you go through modem, you would lose all the speed that the cable
modem would give you, assuming it is possible to do what you want to do
(which I doubt). Certainly you can set the G3 up as a server, using file
sharing, either over your local net or over the internet. However, if
you have a dynamically assigned IP address from your ISP instead of a
static IP address, serving to the internet is a pain.

I would assume your cable ISP also has a dialup number that you have
access to, for situations where the cable service is interrupted, or
when you need access from another location, like from your laptop when
away from home. This is a far easier solution. If your laptop is a mac,
you can create different configurations using location manager so you
can switch easily between using a dialup connection and using your cable
modem via ethernet.
