>He said he doubted that Apple will still be in business in the year 2011.

Will, people have been saying this since the Apple III. It still
hasn't come true, and it's not likely to. Apple appeals to a certain
segment of the market, (people who want quality and reliability, not
price) and that segment is remarkably loyal.

>There price's are quite high compared to other computer manufacturers.

Honestly, they're not. You can't compare an Apple to a
special-of-the-day no-name PC - there's just too much difference in
quality. Compare an Apple to a Dell (The only other manufacturer with
a similar rep for quality, and the only PC I would buy); make sure
they have equivalent features, and you'll usually find the price to
be within a few hundred. (And Apple has just intro'd a new low-end
iMac)

>My main question is what could Apple do to hold up there end of the computer
>sales?

and

>79% buy a PC because they are cheaper.

Don't confuse computers with Operating Systems. Windows, yes, has
about 80% of the installed base, but Apple has about 20%. Linux, etc
total about 3% (Yes, I know that doesn't add up to 100, I said
"about")

But Apple's main business is manufacturing computers, not software.
This varies a lot more. Apple ranges around 8 to 12%, which puts them
in position number two, right behind Dell, who, I think, run around
15%.

That's second place, not dead last - there's many, many, other
computer manufacturers who would give their eyeteeth to have even
half of Apple's market share.

>I also don't see or here of any Apple commercials on TV. I think this is
>another poor method for selling computers. IBM had a really interesting add
>on TV all summer it was kind of neat it said "Do you really want a clone".
>It must have been on like 30 times a day! I think Apple would do better if
>they had more commercials.

Just saw one last night -they're on regularly in prime spots.

I saw that commercial you're talking about - I don't think it was
for IBM, it was for an IBM reseller. IBM's commercials are much
classier (and funnier) than that. Whoever made it, it was possibly
the most annoying thing I've seen in a while. Definitely would
convince me not to buy their product.

Cheers - Steve K.
