I use a Graphite tower, not an iMac. So, I can't say with certainty that it would help on built-in speakers, but I think it's safe to assume that it would. As the iMac's built-in speakers suck on the lower end, have you tried sliding the adjustments all across the full range it offers? You might hear more of a difference at different settings.
I'm a composer. I have my Mac plugged into my mixer, then on to my amp and studio reference monitors. On this system, I can easily hear a noticeable difference.
