Why is beyond me. *Who* uses PDF for bitmapped graphics? It's so bloody inconvenient that I cannot fathom what possessed Apple to do this. They've done some boneheaded things but this certainly counts as one of the worst! TIFF is a pretty good choice. GIFs. JPEGs even (though that introduces lossy compression problems). PICT (ugh) would even suffice in a moment of desperation (at least I can map PICTs to an app that I use for graphics). But PDFs??? I use PDF versions of journal articles *all the time*.
